It's no secret John Oliver's bark usually has some bite.
But the Last Week Tonight With John Oliver host surprised viewers when he hilariously turned on the 2024 Emmy Awards producers on live TV while accepting his win for Outstanding Scripted Varity Show during the Sept. 15 ceremony at the Peacock Theater at L.A. Live in downtown Los Angeles. (See the full list of winners here.)
"Thank you so much. I'd like to thank HBO for not canceling us over the last decade," Oliver, who beat Saturday Night Live for the trophy, quipped on stage. "That was never a guarantee, I appreciate it."
Oliver went on to shout out his wife Kate Norley and their two sons—but accidentally fumbled his words in another LOL-worthy moment.
"And my kids, husband," he said of their first-born before breaking out in laughter. "His name is Hudson, ouch. That's gonna come back to haunt me."
But things took an unexpected turn when Oliver honored his family's late pet.
"I also wanna thank—this is gonna be very silly—our dog," he continued. "We had the most fantastic dog and she was at our wedding and she got us through the pandemic. She was with us through two pregnancies and..."
But when the Emmys producers began to cut his speech short by playing send-off music, he reacted with a bleeped, "F--k you! I feel like Sarah McLaughlan right now."
All jokes aside, Oliver added more seriously, "We had to say goodbye to her. She was an amazing dog and this isn't just for her, it's for all dogs. All dogs. You are very good girls and very good boys. You all deserve a treat. Play me off now!"
